Determination

Following the sudden death of my beloved dog in November 2011, I decided to rescue a puppy that was no longer wanted. Bringing a new puppy into our lives is a very challenging and rewarding experience indeed.

Recently, whilst I was playing with my puppy, I observed something very inspiring and empowering. He wanted to jump onto the couch, and then jump back on the floor. His challenge was that he was not tall enough to jump on the couch!

As I observed a 10 week old puppy using his front paws to pull himself up on the couch, I was very amazed by this little puppy's determination! What struck me the most was that he was not willing to give up, and his persistence was to be marvelled at!

I kept encouraging him to make his way onto the couch, and kept looking at me as I acknowledged his efforts. When he realised that he could get on the couch from a standing start, he took a few steps back and he ran towards the couch only to leap forward and finally he was able jump onto the couch!

His sense of achievement was very obvious. He kept wagging his tail, and it was almost like he was saying . . . 'I did it! I did it!' Needless to say, I was very proud of his efforts!

So, if a little puppy can use the power of determination and persistence to overcome a challenge that was right in front of him, what are we humans capable of?

Please pause for a moment and think about the answer to that question! Then think about a challenge that you are facing now and how will you use the same determination that my puppy used to overcome your challenges. It is the beginning of the year, and most of us would have a resolution, or for the ones that are serious, we would set goals for 2012.

Setting goals is only part of the equation! You must set goals and have action plans which will help you to achieve those goals. I strongly believe that the actions required to achieve a goal are as important as the goal itself!

Now, please follow the following steps which will enable you to make 2012 a very rewarding year for you:

1. Write down at least 3 goals that you would absolutely love to achieve in 2012 - write them in as much detail as possible!

2. Give a reason for each goal - write down why you would want to achieve that goal. This will give you clarity and also give you courage if/when you might feel that this goal is too much to achieve. One question that I ask my Life Coaching clients when they set massive goals is 'What is at stake here?'

3. Next to each goal write the action steps that are required - you must do what is required to achieve your goals! Please remember, if you are doing your best, and your best is not supporting your goals, you may just fall short of achieving your them.

4. Make a list of your talents, skills, abilities - everyone is good at something(s). Are you fully aware of what you are good at? Once you complete this list, go to each goal that you have written for 2012, and ask yourself 'How will my talents, skills, and abilities support this goal?'

Going back to the example of my puppy, whose goal was to get on the coach, he knew that he could run and he used that to support his goal! Last year, I released my first book. Now, any published author will tell you that releasing a book is a mammoth task. Before I embarked on this project, I reminded myself of all my talents, skills, and abilities that will support me in becoming a published author!

5. Seek guidance and support - I have always believed in reaching out to others for their guidance and support. Hence, I have had a Life Coach and I still have mentors who share their insights with me. It is amazing how someone else's ideas, perspective or experiences can support us to grow. My little puppy had me as his encourager when he wanted to get on the couch. Getting a coach or a mentor will give you more than just encouragement; it will give you clarity as well!

The above 5 steps will give you some clarity and confidence in setting and achieving your goals in 2012. However, you need to be determined enough in achieving your goals despite the obstacles that you may face!

As Conrad Hilton once said . . . 'Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit.'

Are you determined enough to achieve your goals in 2012?
