Being of One Mind

A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he told them to gather up a bundle of twenty sticks all of about the same size and thickness and then bring them to him. When they had done so, he tied the bundle together with a piece of string then placed the bundle into the hands of each of them, one at a time and asked each of them to break the bundle in half.

They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it. He next removed the string from the bundle, took the sticks, one by one, and again put them into his sons' hands and asked them to break each stick, upon which they broke them easily.

He then addressed them with these words: 'My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as the bundle of sticks, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided amongst yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.'

Attitude over Circumstances

A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he strutted through the backyard, wearing his baseball cap and carrying a bat and ball.

'I'm the greatest hitter in the world,' he announced. Then, he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it, and missed.

'Strike One!' he yelled. Undaunted, he picked up the ball and said again, 'I'm the greatest hitter in the world!' He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down he swung again and missed. 'Strike Two!' he cried.

The boy then paused a moment to examine his bat and ball carefully. He spat on his hands and rubbed them together, then straightened his cap and said once more, 'I'm the greatest hitter in the world!' Again he tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it. He missed. 'Strike Three - you are out.' he shouted.

'Wow!' he then exclaimed. 'I'm the greatest pitcher in the world!'

Your attitude determines how circumstances impact your life. The little boy's circumstances hadn't changed, but his optimistic attitude prompted him to give an encouraging meaning to what had happened.

What difficult time are you going through right now? Can you do something to change it?

If you can, don't wait another day, make the needed changes. If you can't change the circumstances, then change your attitude and you'll discover that circumstances won't have the last word.

Faith

Faith isn't anything you can see;
it isn't anything you can touch;
but you can feel it in your heart.
Faith is what keeps you trying
when others would have given up.
It keeps you believing in the goodness
of others and helps you find it.

Faith is trusting in a power greater than
yourself and knowing that whatever happens,
this power will carry you through anything.
It is believing in yourself and having courage
to stand up for what you believe in.

Faith is peace in the midst of a storm,
determination in the midst of adversity,
and safety in the midst of trouble.
For nothing can touch a soul
that is protected by faith.
