Don’t hold yourself back

A CEO of a medium sized successful private company was very strict and always expected high achievement from all his employees. He often counselled his employees for any mistakes they made on the job or for their perceived lack of commitment to progress in their work and with the company.

One Monday morning, as the employees arrived at work, there was a large sign on the front door that read . . . ‘Yesterday, the person who has been holding you back from growing in your role and succeeding in this company passed away, so would please gather for a short memorial service in the meeting room.’

While all the employees were saddened for the CEO and his family, they were also intrigued at the prospect of now being able to move on and up within the company and become more successful without the impact of the CEO’s very strict approach and high expectations of each of them.

Upon entering the meeting room, many employees were surprised to see the CEO was, in fact, still alive and present. They all wondered amongst themselves . . . ‘If it wasn’t him who was holding us back from being successful, who was it and who has passed away?’

In the middle of the room sitting on a stand was an open coffin and one by one, the employees approached the coffin and upon looking inside, each was very surprised. At first, they didn’t quite understand what they saw.

Laying in the coffin was a large mirror and when each employee looked into the coffin to find out who had been holding them back from being successful, everyone saw themselves. Next to the mirror, there was a sign that read . . . ‘The only person who is able to limit your growth is you and you are the only person who can influence your success. Your life changes when you break through your limiting beliefs and realize that you’re in control of your life. The most influential relationship you can have is the relationship you have with yourself. Now  thatyou know who has been holding you back from living up to your true potential at work, are you going to keep allowing that person to hold you back?’

As each employee went to leave the room there was another sign on the door that led out of the meeting room which said . . .

‘You can’t blame anyone else if you’re not living up to your potential. You can’t let other people get you down about mistakes you make or their negative perception of your efforts. You have to take personal responsibility for your work, both the good and the bad and be proactive about making any necessary adjustments, so that nothing will hold you back.’
