Energy Vibes: Are You an Energiser or a Drainer?

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately sensed a shift in energy? It could be a colleague's beaming smile or an uplifting conversation that leaves you feeling invigorated and motivated. Alternatively, it could be a negative comment or a draining interaction that leaves you feeling depleted and frustrated.

The impact of our energy levels on those around us, especially in the workplace, cannot be understated. Our natural energy style, whether we are energy givers or takers, can greatly affect our workplace relationships and dynamics.

Energy givers are those who exude positivity and enthusiasm, inspiring others to be their best selves. They are the ones who approach meetings with a can-do attitude and a contagious sense of optimism.

On the flip side, energy takers are those who drain the energy from a room, leaving others feeling exhausted and disengaged. They are the ones who complain, criticize, and focus on the negative, dampening the morale of those around them.

So, which one do you identify with?

It's important to note that being an energy giver doesn't mean you have to be perpetually cheerful or ignore the challenges that come with work. It's about approaching situations with a solutions-oriented mindset and bringing a positive energy to the table.

Energy takers, on the other hand, tend to dwell on problems without offering constructive solutions, perpetuating a cycle of negativity that can have detrimental effects on workplace culture and productivity.

If you find that you tend to be an energy taker, don't fret - there are steps you can take to shift your energy style. Start by cultivating gratitude and positivity, even in the face of challenges. Practice active listening and offer constructive feedback instead of criticism. And most importantly, surround yourself with other energy givers who can inspire and motivate you.

It's crucial to recognize that we all have the potential to be both energy givers and takers at different points in our lives, depending on the circumstances we find ourselves in.

However, the consistent energy style we exhibit over time can become our energy brand, so it's important to be mindful of how we show up in the workplace and take steps to shift our energy style if necessary.

By being intentional about our energy and striving to be energy givers, we can foster a more positive and productive workplace culture for ourselves and those around us. It's worth noting that this principle also extends beyond the workplace and can greatly impact our personal lives.

In our personal relationships, our energy style can affect our interactions with family, friends, and loved ones. Being an energy giver means approaching relationships with kindness, empathy, and support, while being mindful of our words and actions. It means being present, actively listening, and offering encouragement and solutions, rather than negativity or criticism.

On the other hand, being an energy taker in our personal lives can drain the joy and connection from our relationships. Constant complaining, criticising, and focusing on the negative can create tension, conflict, and emotional exhaustion, leaving us and those around us feeling drained and disheartened.

Here are some tips to cultivate positive energy in our personal lives:

  • Practice gratitude: Focusing on what we appreciate and are grateful for can shift our mindset to a more positive outlook and generate positive energy.

  • Foster healthy communication: Be mindful of how we communicate with others. Use words that are uplifting and constructive, and actively listen to understand others' perspectives without judgment.

  • Surround ourselves with positive influences: Spend time with people who inspire and motivate us, and limit exposure to negative influences that drain our energy.

  • Take care of ourselves: Physical and mental well-being greatly impact our energy levels. Prioritise self-care through exercise, healthy eating, adequate rest, and activities that bring joy and relaxation.

  • Practice mindfulness: Cultivate awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and reactions, and consciously choose to respond with positivity and empathy instead of reacting impulsively with negativity.

By extending the principle of being an energy giver beyond the workplace and applying it to our personal lives, we can create more fulfilling and harmonious relationships, enhance our overall well-being, and contribute to a more positive and energised environment for ourselves and those around us.
